It's raining it's pouring......

This morning it was raining.    It didn't matter that it was cold or that it was before 9am...Ryan was playing in it and all that the rain created.

Ryan doing his best new cross eyed face.   We're so proud !  :)

5K

I am having a hard time not screaming it out and being so proud of myself.....and then just being embarrassed and feeling more like a wanna be.
This last Saturday morning I ran my very first ever run of any kind.   It was a Heart and Stroke 5k.
One of my best friends was doing it for a work team and asked me to run with her.
I had been running.  albeit around a track at the high school.  and that was only off and on until it got too hot to run in the heat of the summer this year.   I did exercise before the cruise to Canada in July. and then of course things just kind of fell apart...I had good intentions and then.  bluuuh.

I did however prepare for the race by carb loading the night before.   I TOTALLY had pizza and cinnamon sticks.
We got there before 8 am Sat.morning it was so cold.   I was actually excited to get moving.
We made several jokes about stopping, cutting across the grass, walking it and falling just to get out of running period.
What happened however was quite the opposite.   We ran.  and ran.  and if you've ever run in Utah....the altitude here will dang near kill you.  (especially if you haven't trained for it) and it dang near killed me.  but I did it.  I ran it in 32 minutes too.  not bad for a firsty.
Whatever.  I know it wasn't a 1/2 marathon.  It was just over 3 miles.  3.10686 to be exact.    and I did it.
I asked if I could get a ragnar sticker or 26.2 sticker to put on my rear windshield so that I could feel like a real runner.   I really wish it was acceptable to put a 5k or a 3.1 sticker on your rear windshield without being laughed at by other runners.   but alas.  I doubt anyone even makes them.

Running this 5k didn't give me the bug to run another one.  Or train for a bigger one.   I can't say that I'll ever have a running sticker on my car.   but I can't say that I won't either.
Yes I was the one who kept the bag full of "information"
I also walked around and signed up for free stuff at all of the booths too.  ;-)

To add some heart warming to the story.   My other friend who I ran with had an accident and was told she would never walk again, it was a surprise that she survived at all. (a guy hit her parachute while paragliding causing her to free fall 250 to the ground)   Her bottom half is pretty much screwed together.    She ran it.   Made it in 37 minutes.
Pretty darn amazing.
Does it inspire me to work harder to run another one.  eeeeh, not so much.  :)

It's official.  As of Monday there are no more training wheels at our house.
Ryan was the last to surrender his and I think that having his 2 BFF's (1 of whom I taught in my drive way last week) and twin brother riding was motivation enough.
I am a firm believer in this method.   It has now worked in my teaching 6 kids ranging in ages from 7-barely 4....in a matter of 5 minutes or less.

I'd also like to add....that we practice better bike safety than this. I was cleaning up the yard of bikes and jump ropes when Ryan jumped on and wanted to "show" me that he could ride. I gave him one time around the drive way to show me so that we could record it.

I'm totally that mom......

who said after putting her first child in swimming lessons at 2.  t-ball at 3.  ballet at 3.  and piano at 6.  ok, actually I'm ok with piano at 6.  for her.  that I wouldn't waste our time and money on activities like these until the kids were a little older.  and could maybe appreciate and or pay attention.

I'm also the mom who said that I wouldn't over schedule our children.  putting them in multiple activities.

And I'm still not that mom.   Janice is.  :)
She signed the kids up to play soccer.   and although I think the older boys are old enough to enjoy it a little.   I still think it will be a waste of our money.

Sydney has to take piano...but I have given her the option of choosing a second extra-curriculum activity that she might enjoy.
Thus far she's taken gymnastics, dance, swimming lessons are always in there and tennis.  She has now decided to act.   (quite perfect for her really,  not lacking in the dramatics area)
I signed her up with a local musical theater company.   They teach them some dancing, singing and acting....but mostly it's about self esteem and making friends.  It's just a couple of blocks away, once a week and inexpensive.  (see me smiling)

When J asked her if she wanted to play soccer, she of course jumped on it and said yes.   that's when I put my head down, instead of my foot and figured I'd let her try it.

Syd and the littles had their first game today.   No practices.  Just a game.
Yes. you can imagine it.

(cue lights, cue music)
It was MAGICAL.    Nate and Ryan killed the soccer ball.

There was amazing follow through

and precise placement of the ball in the net

uh huh, everything was going great.....but once the actual game started.  when they had to play against other kids......we got that stand in a confused herd thing.   just like I thought.
The coaches were constantly grabbing them by the shoulders and aiming them towards the other team who seemed to always have the ball.   Ryan came crying off of the field 45 seconds into the game.   The yelling of the crowd to kick the ball was too overwhelming and so he sat in my lap the rest of the game refusing to ever play again.
Nate had NO idea what he was doing.   Half the time he would start walking off of the field because he needed a drink.  He told his coach at one point that he needed crackers and his coach kindly explained that he needed to wait until after the game.
But he played.   Almost the whole time too.
The other team killed them.   I think it was like 6-0.   A little girl named Sarah made 4 of the goals and another little girl made the other 2.  Oh, wait....except one goal our team member made FOR them.  (girls ROCK)
So any ways.

Syd on the other hand.   She's old enough to pay attention and to follow instructions.
I knew that she could take this whole thing seriously.
bomp

chicka  bomp..bomp

chicka bomp...bomp

her reaction to being caught shaking her groove thing

she got to be goalie for a quarter

"what up yo.."

She was able to be serious and get her head in the game

and was actually super great.

I really really REALLY think that you should wait until the kids are bit older to sign them up for these kinds of things.    You are just paying for their uniform and trophy.   well and the hysterical laughing and awesome fun pictures.  plus there is that end of game cheering for the other team and giving high fives before heading back to the coach for a juice box, granola bar and pep talk.
yeah.  totally worth it.   :-)
Thursday- The big boys first game.

The newest member of our family.

Sydney has been saving her money.  Mostly because she's tight and refuses to spend it.  but she also decided that she was going to buy herself a pet and wasn't wasting a dime of "her" money on anything else.

We had talked about several little pet people that she might buy and keep in her room.   A snake has always been high on the list.   Hamsters and other furry rodent types were placed a little lower on the list trying to hide from J....but eventually Janice erased anything that resembled a mouse from all of the lists including the secret ones when we weren't looking.
She was interested in a tarantula.   but I think that even made her a little creepy crawly.
Mostly it was just cool that everybody got to hold one.

After it all she picked a lizard.    We researched and googled and checked out and read books and talked to people and decided on the perfect kind, a good age, cage, food, and light requirements.  and we even offered to go half on all of what it would take to make her a member of our family.
I introduce Lucille.   Sydney's bearded dragon.

This shows the bearded part.   They are spiky but don't hurt to touch.

She's a sweety that one is.   Lucille too.  :)

Kindergarten

This is the 400th post.  What better way to celebrate it than by posting about Cameron and Spencer's first day of kindergarten.

with pictures......
Sydney has been SO excited to walk her brothers to school.   She's been talking about it since last year.

The big sister

hugs goodbye

and a little last minute advice

My kindergartners

They found a friend from preschool

and took off running.

Same class.   Same table.
Kindergarten was a hit.   They were both cool and calm going...and smiling and happy at pick up.
Tomorrow is the real 1st day.   Tomorrow is 3rd grade and kindergarten and preschool all at the same time.
SAME TIME !
(catching my breath)
I'm going to sit here now and daydream about what those 2 hours are going to be like for me.

Doing the Nateman dance !

They may be a size 13, and one might think with feet that big surely they'd be 2 left feet.  I would have to disagree.  This kids got moves as smooth as buttah he does !
:-)
without further ado.
Nate.  Doing the Nateman dance.

He asked for the Ghost Busters song so he could do his hip hop dancing.   He then agreed to let me video him....which has never happened....so I jumped on it.   I didn't want to make any sudden movements ie. getting up to move across the room so that I could get a better view, for fear that he'd stop.....so I apologize that you aren't getting the whole picture.  because let me tell you.  the whole picture is the shiznit yo.
